[εις επαινον δοξης αυτου] New comment on "Lying," Richard Wilbur.

helenwallis has left a new comment on your post ""Lying," Richard Wilbur":

This is a wonderful poem, and Richard Wilbur is a wonderful poet! But I'm puzzled by the lines at the end about something that "worked three hundred years or more in the dark caves of France". I get that Roland was defending a baggage carriage that belonged to Charlemagne, but what worked 300 or more years in French caves I've asked two retired English professors about the lines, and neither of them had a clue. Do you?
